The car manufacturer Daewoo Motors was originally founded in 1937 as National Motors in South Korea and later produced the then successful Datsun Bluebird under the name Saenara Motors. A joint venture with General Motors followed in 1972, and ten years later the Daewoo Group took over, giving the brand its final name.

From then until the mid-1990s, production of vehicles based mainly on GM models began. Since 2005, General Motors has held the largest share in GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (GM DAT). Since 2011, the company has been represented on the automobile market as GM Korea. The models produced are sold under the Chevrolet and Holden brands.
